How to Prepare Your Yard for Winter
A little work before winter can keep the property cleaner, safer, and easier to bring back in spring.
Keep mowing while grass is growing
Continue mowing as needed until growth slows. Avoid cutting a large amount at once, and wait when the ground is soaked.
Remove heavy leaf buildup
Do not let thick, wet leaves remain over the lawn. Clear lawns, walkways, entrances, and drainage areas regularly.
Complete a final property cleanup
Pick up branches, sticks, toys, trash, and loose debris before winter weather makes the work harder.
Trim problem growth
Cut back bushes or hedges that block walkways, windows, signs, gates, driveways, or safe access.
Check mulch beds
Keep mulch around two to three inches deep and pull it away from trunks, plant stems, siding, and foundations.
Plan spring work early
Make a short list of mowing, cleanup, bush trimming, and mulch work you may need when warm weather returns.
